Shippai Taikai™ ("Failure Gathering") is a program where people share the failures that came from taking on challenges, along with what they learned, and celebrate one another. Anyone can host it for free at schools, local governments, business associations, workplaces and communities.
In Japan, there is a culture of hiding failure as something shameful. Some people stop trying because they fear failing, and sometimes people who fail are laughed at.
Shippai Taikai™ creates spaces where people can talk about their failures openly. By increasing the number of people who take on challenges, we aim to make society brighter. When more adults enjoy their work, children's futures become brighter too.
Split into groups of about four and take turns speaking. No special preparation or materials are needed.
Take turns talking about a failure from a challenge you took on, and what you learned from it.
Everyone listening celebrates the challenge with applause, turning "failure" into learning.
At the end, each participant takes time to praise themselves.
Both speakers and listeners naturally start smiling, and the room fills with warm applause.
